Giving That Old Sofa New Life

Old sofas. What do you make out of old sofas you no longer want to keep. You are in dilemma. It’s too old to be used, broken even, but it has sentimental value attached to it. There is also the question of being environmentally friendly, as you do not wish to simply throw out an old sofa on a whim.

What if I tell you, you can turn that old sofa new again? Here are ways you can turn old sofas into new sofas again.

1. Painting over your sofa

Yes, there is such thing as sofa paint. People have doubts when they hear of sofa paint, not just because its existence has been questioned but its practicality too. As someone who is currently looking into giving your old sofas a new look, I too have doubts over sofa paints.

Sofa paint seems to work well according to Katie Steuernagle at Apartment Therapy. Steuernagle wanted to have a sofa makeover because the sofa colour was not the one she fancied. Although her sofa was anything but old, sofa paint seems to work out quite well.

In Steuernagle’s blog, she mentioned how she has dabbed her sofa with leather paint. She did not just get the colour she wants, but it has also made her sofa look new. All that for reportedly just USD$50.

If sofa paint works for old sofas, we can forgo throwing out that old sofa and try out sofa paints.

2. Tufting your sofa

Cushioned sofas tend to sag over long years of use, and it’s a normal sign of usage. Assess if the sofa and its cushion are still usable. If it is, try tufting it. Tufting your sofa basically means making your droopy sofa cushion look perkier. It’s a mess-free technique that does not call for paints and dyes.

At Oh Everything Handmade, it claims to have changed an entire sofa appearance in 20 minutes! In 20 minutes it has made a huge impact on its sofa.

Oh Everything Handmade has documented their “tuft journey” on their blog. After they has tufted their sofa, we can see how their sofa has changed immensely. From a frumpy, old sofa, it has transformed into a sofa that looks almost good as new. Honestly reading, it actually looks super!

Tufting your sofa don’t just give it new life, in fact, it gives your sofa a more expensive look. It’s a “sofa renovation” worth trying on sofas with saggy cushions.

3. Clean your sofa

Of course, how did anyone not think of this obvious “advise”? A deep cleaning can do so much for a sofa. Sometimes your sofa isn’t exactly old, but looks old. With a bit of effort and time invested in deep cleaning your sofa, it will look almost as good as when you first bought it.

Lovely Etc has come up with a simple way you can clean your “shlumpy” sofa. All you need is a spray bottle, rubbing alcohol, a scrub brush, a white or tan sponge, and poly-fill.

First, remove any nasty spots by spraying rubbing alcohol on the sofa. Do one cushion at a time if it is easier for you. Then proceed to “scrub” the cushion with your sponge. Put a bit extra effort on areas that are badly stained.

Let the whole thing dry, and then proceed to brush the entire sofa surface in a circular motion. Do this using a scrub brush. After this step, your couch should look much better than it last was. If it still has areas that still look dirty or bad, start over with the spraying again.

Your sofa feeling and looking saggy? Not wanting to tuft it? That’s a job for poly-fill! Simple fluffing may not make much difference for all cushions. The author at Lovely Etc has decided that the best solution is to re-stuff the cushions. With poly-fill, stuff each cushion full to its corners. You just have to keep the poly-fills behind the original stuffing to prevent lumps and bumps.

4. Cover it with pillows

It can be as simple as covering up your sofa with pillows. Some people may not want to spend all that money on renewing an old sofa, hence opting for using pillows to cover it.

Choose pillows that match your sofa’s colour. Add a bit of cheer and fun. Sofa pillows give your sofa a fuller and comfortable look. It’s practical too as you can substitute your sofa for a bed. Sofa pillows give you something to hug when you are reading, watching a movie, or just about anything else. After all, it’s all about having sofa comfort!

5. Add nail-head trims and replace sofa legs

It’s in the details of your old sofas sometimes. Give your old sofa a new makeover by adding nail-head trims to your sofas. Nail-head trims give your old sofa a newer, sometimes even a classier look.

Sometimes your sofa may look old because of its legs. Your sofa legs may make it look old or just plain boring. Spice up your old sofa by replacing it with a new one. You can make your old sofa look modern, or make your modern-looking sofa look traditional.

Just remember, when changing your sofa’s legs not all new legs fit perfectly into your old sofa. You may have to do some customization to make your new sofa legs fit into your old sofa.

6. Get new covers for your sofas

Get new slip covers for your sofa. It’s that easy. Changing new covers not just mean giving your old sofa a new look, you can also choose the colors and patterns for your sofa’s new covers.

Your sofa may not have its own line of slipcovers, but you can find slip covers just about anywhere. Some fits perfectly, some may not. Even if the covers may not fit into your sofa as customs ones do, do keep in mind that you can always customize it. Also, its old sofa you are giving new life to. It may not look as stellar as when you first bought it, so you may have to compromise on that too.

7. Make your own sofa

You don’t want to get materials to renew and/or replace your old sofa. Also, you may not have the budget to get a new sofa. What other options are there?

Well, there’s the option of making your own sofa. You may have to spend some money on buying the materials to build your own. Or recycle parts from old sofas and other materials. Making your own sofa gives you the autonomy and idea of what you want your sofa to look like.

You just have to spend some time and money in planning out and building your own sofa. There are also plenty of guides on the internet that caters to making your own sofas.

8. Get a new sofa

Maybe revamping your old sofa is not worth the time and money. If it isn’t worth the time and money, get a new one to replace your old one instead. Sometimes the time spent on renewing your old time is far longer than time spent on looking for a new one. There are times when spending money on materials to renew your old sofas is almost as much as getting a new one. Hence, it’s perfectly all right to get a new sofa with all that time and money spent on your old sofa.

Conclusively saying, giving old sofa new life isn’t entirely too difficult. You may have to invest some time and money into revamping that old thing to give it a few more years. By end of the day, it’s still a sofa and still has its own uses. Otherwise, if you do not wish to spend all that money and time in revamping your old sofa, it’s time to go shopping for a new one!
